2018 Parade Queen Kathleen Brown-Vandercruys

This year’s Queen is 23-year-old Kathleen Brown-Vandercruys. Kathleen is a recent graduate of McGill University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Political Science. She is currently employed by the City of Dorval’s Aquatics and Sports complex while waiting to become an Infantryman for the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves’ Canadian Grenadier Guards Regiment. While in school, she was very active on the Dawson and McGill rowing teams and played competitive water polo.

Kathleen’s Irish ancestry can be traced back to her mother’s family who hailed from Crossmaglen, County Armagh as well as Newry, County Down.

Her love of volunteering began in high school where she helped several adult organizations. It truly blossomed when she was a catechism teacher for children at St Veronica’s church, then a leader in summer programs with the City of Dorval. She continued to volunteer at an NGO called ELIMU Pamoja with children as an online English teacher. This organization looks at the impacts of cross-cultural Skype tutoring between McGill students and sixth-grade students at an elementary school in Kenya.

For the last two years, Kathleen has been involved with Asociacion Incawasi, a non-profit organization in Peru that focuses on improving the educational, social, and nutritional situation of children of all ages. She has already taken two trips to Peru to volunteer and eagerly awaits her third trip.
