Les membres du Conseil exécutif se sont réunis hier soir et ont choisi les dignitaires pour le 200e défilé de la Saint-Patrick de Montréal, et j’ai le plaisir de vous les présenter :
Grand Maréchal
Danny Doyle Sr.
Danny Doyle est fier de remonter son ascendance irlandaise jusqu’à ses ancêtres, James Doyle et Mary Coffey, qui se sont installés à Griffintown au début des années 1900. Ayant grandi dans une grande famille irlandaise, Danny a passé ses premières années à Griffintown avant de déménager à Pointe-Saint-Charles, où il a rencontré et épousé Cathy Ross. Ensemble, ils ont ensuite fait de Verdun leur foyer, où ils ont élevé leurs trois fils, Shawn, Danny Jr. et Brandon. Aujourd’hui grands-parents fiers, Danny et Cathy chérissent chaque moment passé avec leur famille grandissante.
Tout au long de sa vie, Danny a servi sa communauté avec dévouement et passion. Il a été président des Sociétés Irlandaises Unies de 2016 à 2017, et il est actuellement président de l’Erin Sports Association. Son influence s’étend également en tant que membre du conseil d’administration de la Fondation du Parc du Monument Irlandais de Montréal, un rôle à travers lequel il contribue activement à la préservation du patrimoine irlandais. Ses efforts de bénévolat incluent le soutien à la banque alimentaire de la paroisse St. Gabriel avec Sœur Dianna, son service au comité exécutif des UIS supervisant les nominations, et son rôle crucial en tant que chef examinateur pour le défilé de la Saint-Patrick de 2012. Il a également été trésorier du Temple de la renommée de Pointe-Saint-Charles, parmi de nombreuses autres contributions.

Michel Gibson
Michel Gibson, un fonctionnaire de longue date, a été réélu trois fois en tant que maire de Kirkland, démontrant son engagement continu envers la communauté. Son implication au conseil municipal de Kirkland remonte aux années 1990, et au fil des décennies, il a travaillé sans relâche pour améliorer la ville. Parmi ses réalisations notables, on compte la création de zones résidentielles mixtes conçues pour offrir des options de logement aux personnes âgées souhaitant réduire la taille de leur domicile, ainsi que la modernisation des infrastructures de Kirkland pour qu’elles soient plus inclusives et intergénérationnelles, permettant à tous les résidents de prospérer. Michel a également reçu, en 2012, la Médaille du jubilé de diamant de la reine Elizabeth II pour ses contributions et réalisations remarquables au Canada.
En plus de ses réalisations civiques, le maire Gibson est très fier de son patrimoine celtique. Depuis de nombreuses années, il est un soutien indéfectible des Sociétés Irlandaises Unies, participant activement aux activités de l’organisation. Chaque année, il organise une après-midi spéciale de célébration irlandaise, réunissant l’UIS, les premiers citoyens de Kirkland et la communauté pour honorer le prochain défilé de la Saint-Patrick. Cet événement festif comprend des dignitaires des SIU, la Reine et sa Cour, ainsi que d’autres invités spéciaux. Le maire Gibson offre généreusement un buffet magnifiquement disposé, des divertissements et des cadeaux attentionnés pour la Reine et sa Cour, renforçant ainsi un esprit d’unité et de célébration.

Kenneth Quinn

Son engagement à promouvoir l’histoire irlandaise de Montréal est inégalé, cherchant constamment des informations et écrivant des articles engageants qui enrichissent la connaissance de nos membres. Le travail de Ken dépasse les UIS, car il contribue également à diverses publications, veillant à ce que l’histoire et le patrimoine irlandais soient célébrés et préservés pour les générations futures.
La fierté profonde de Ken pour son patrimoine irlandais se reflète dans tout ce qu’il fait, tout comme Liam Daly, un autre ardent défenseur de la culture irlandaise. Ken a également été désigné “Irlandais de l’année 2024” par l’Erin Sports Association, un titre tout à fait mérité pour quelqu’un d’aussi impliqué dans la communauté irlandaise de Montréal.
C’est avec un immense plaisir que nous nommons Kenneth Quinn lauréat du prix du Patrimoine Liam Daly 2025.
Fils natif de Dublin, en Irlande, Liam Daly était fier de son patrimoine irlandais. Dès le premier jour de son arrivée, par son talent, son amour et son dévouement, Liam a consacré son temps à la présence continue des arts et de la culture irlandaise dans la ville de Montréal. Liam manque à la communauté irlandaise. En hommage à lui, les Sociétés Irlandaises Unies de Montréal ont créé le Prix du Patrimoine Liam Daly, qui sera décerné à un candidat méritant qui incarne l’amour de Liam pour son héritage et qui fait la promotion du patrimoine irlandais à travers les arts.

George O’Reilly et Susan Mooney
George et Susan Mooney sont des bénévoles dévoués à la communauté avec un profond engagement à aider les autres. George, après avoir pris sa retraite du service d’incendie de Verdun avec plus de 30 ans de service, a continué à soutenir sa communauté en servant des repas grâce au camion alimentaire de l’Armée du Salut, en livrant des repas dans le cadre du programme Meals on Wheels, et en étant bénévole au club de petit-déjeuner à l’école primaire de Verdun de 2010 jusqu’à la pandémie en 2020. Il a également dirigé la banque alimentaire Manna Verdun en tant que président de 2010 à 2020, livrant personnellement des aliments aux personnes dans le besoin. George a également été célébrant communautaire à la Mission de Verdun de 2013 à 2015, et en 2024, il a repris son travail avec Meals on Wheels à LaSalle.
Le bénévolat de Susan a également été touché par le COVID, mais de 2016 à 2020, elle a soutenu fidèlement Manna Verdun, le club de petit-déjeuner à l’école primaire de Verdun, et le Mini Market à la Mission de Verdun. Après l’intégration de Manna au Centre communautaire Dawson, elle a continué à faire du bénévolat à la banque alimentaire Dawson jusqu’à sa fermeture en 2022. Susan a également été célébrante communautaire à la Mission de Verdun et, en 2024, elle a commencé à faire du bénévolat à Meals on Wheels LaSalle ainsi qu’à la banque alimentaire Saint-Willibrord.
Ensemble, George et Susan sont partenaires non seulement dans la vie mais aussi dans leur dévouement commun à servir les moins fortunés de leur communauté, agissant discrètement et humblement sans chercher la reconnaissance, à l’image de Simon McDonaugh.

The Executive Committee met last night and to choose the dignitaries for Montreal’s 200th St Patrick’s Parade, and I am delighted to present them to you:
Grand Marshal
Danny Doyle Sr.
Danny Doyle proudly traces his Irish ancestry back to his forebears, James Doyle and Mary Coffey, who settled in Griffintown in the early 1900s. Growing up in a large Irish family, Danny spent his formative years in Griffintown before moving to Pointe St. Charles, where he met and married Cathy Ross. Together, they later made their home in Verdun, where they raised their three sons, Shawn, Danny Jr., and Brandon. Now proud grandparents, Danny and Cathy treasure every moment spent with their growing family.
Throughout his life, Danny has served his community with dedication and passion. He was President of the United Irish Societies (UIS) from 2016 to 2017, and he currently leads the Erin Sports Association as its President. His influence extends further as a Board Member of the Montreal Irish Monument Park Foundation, a role through which he actively contributes to preserving Irish heritage. His volunteer efforts include supporting Sister Dianna’s food bank at St. Gabriel’s Parish, serving on the UIS executive committee overseeing nominations, and playing a pivotal role as Chief Reviewing Officer for the 2012 St. Patrick’s Parade. He also served as the treasurer for the Pointe St. Charles Hall of Recognition, among numerous other contributions.
Danny is regarded as a pillar of the Irish community, and many would call him an icon. His deep-rooted dedication to service and leadership has not gone unnoticed, and it is with great pride that he has been named the Grand Marshal of the 200th Montreal St. Patrick’s Parade—a fitting recognition for his lasting contributions.

Michel Gibson
Michel Gibson, a long-serving public official, has been re-elected as Mayor of Kirkland three times, demonstrating his enduring commitment to the community. His involvement in Kirkland’s City Council dates back to the 1990s, and over the decades, he has worked tirelessly to improve the city. Among his notable accomplishments is the establishment of mixed residential areas designed to provide housing options for seniors looking to downsize, as well as the modernization of Kirkland’s infrastructure to be more inclusive and intergenerational, ensuring that all residents can thrive. Michel was also awarded in 2012 the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his remarkable contributions and achievements to Canada.
In addition to his civic achievements, Mayor Gibson takes great pride in his Celtic heritage. For many years, he has been a steadfast supporter of the United Irish Societies (UIS), actively engaging with the organization and its activities. Each year, he hosts a special afternoon of Irish celebration, bringing together the UIS, Kirkland’s first citizens, and the community to honour the upcoming St. Patrick’s Parade. This festive event includes dignitaries from the UIS, the Queen and her Court, and
other special guests. Mayor Gibson graciously provides a beautifully arranged buffet, entertainment, and thoughtful gifts for the Queen and Court, fostering a sense of unity and celebration.
Liam Daly Heritage Award

When former United Irish Societies (UIS) Historian Don Pidgeon retired, Kenneth Quinn stepped into the role with a passion and dedication that has made him an invaluable asset to the organization. Serving as UIS Historian for many years, Ken has taken on this responsibility with the utmost seriousness and has truly elevated the role. His commitment to promoting Montreal’s Irish history is unmatched, consistently seeking out information and writing engaging articles that enrich the knowledge of our members. Ken’s work extends beyond UIS, as he also contributes to various publications, ensuring that Irish history and heritage are celebrated and preserved for future generations.
Ken’s deep pride in his Irish heritage is evident in everything he does, much like Liam Daly, another staunch advocate of Irish culture. Ken’s ability to highlight important moments and figures in Montreal’s Irish history reflects his devotion to keeping the spirit of Irish heritage alive. His efforts go beyond research; they inspire others to explore and take pride in their own Irish roots, making him a true ambassador for our shared history.
His legacy as UIS Historian is not just in the wealth of knowledge he brings to the role, but in the way he connects our past to our present, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of Irish culture within our community. Ken was also the 2024 Erin Sports Association’s Irishman of the Year, a truly deserved title for someone so involved in the Irish community of Montreal.
It is with tremendous pleasure that we name Kenneth Quinn as the 2025 Liam Daly Heritage Award winner.
A native son of Dublin, Ireland, Liam Daly, was proud of his Irish heritage. From the first day he arrived, through his talent, love and devotion, Liam volunteered his time to the continual presence of the Arts and the Irish Cultural in the City of Montreal Liam is missed by the Irish Community. As a tribute to him, the United Irish Societies of Montreal has
created the Liam Daly Heritage Award which will be awarded to a worthy candidate who exemplifies Liam’s love of his heritage and promotes the Irish heritage through the arts.
Simon McDonaugh Humanitarian Award
George O’Reilly and Susan Mooney
George and Susan Mooney are devoted community volunteers with a deep commitment to helping others. George, after retiring from the Verdun Fire Department with over 30 years of service, continued to support his community by serving meals through the Salvation Army Food Truck, delivering Meals on Wheels, and volunteering at the Breakfast Club at Verdun Elementary from 2010 until the pandemic in 2020. He also led the Manna Verdun Food Bank as President from 2010 to 2020, personally delivering food to those in need. George’s service extended to being a Community Celebrator at the Verdun Mission from 2013 to 2015, and in 2024, he resumed his Meals on Wheels work in LaSalle.
Susan’s volunteerism was similarly impacted by COVID, but from 2016 to 2020, she faithfully supported Manna Verdun, the Breakfast Club at Verdun Elementary, and the Mini Market at Verdun Mission. Following Manna’s integration into Dawson Community Center, she continued volunteering at the Dawson Food Bank until its closure in 2022. Susan also served as a Community Celebrator at the Verdun Mission and, in 2024, began volunteering at both Meals on Wheels LaSalle and Saint Willibrord Food Bank.
Together, George and Susan are partners not only in life but also in their shared dedication to serving the less fortunate in their community, quietly and humbly making a difference without seeking recognition, much like Simon McDonaugh.
The United Irish Societies is pleased to name George O’Reilly and Susan Mooney as this year’s Simon McDonaugh Humanitarian Award winners.
The United Irish Societies lost a dear and valued member in 1992, when Simon McDonaugh passed away. An award was established in 1993 for the community to remember Mr. McDonaugh’s dedication to his heritage and to the humanitarian acts performed during his life. Mr. McDonaugh’s association with the United Irish Societies and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade were longstanding: from 1940 to 1979 he served the organization and the annual parade as its Chief Deputy Marshal. During those years, he was an inspiration to the marshals and society members due to the successful execution of the parades. For many years, he and his colleagues were
responsible for building the reviewing stands for dignitaries to review the parades. In later years, Mr. McDonaugh was presented with a Gold Card Membership in recognition of a lifetime of loyal and faithful service to the United Irish Societies and to the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The memory of Mr. McDonaugh’s humanitarian lifestyle lives on through this award.
